DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (WXYZ) — A man shot and killed his 67-year-old mother and 33-year-old sister at Cherry Hill Village Apartments Saturday afternoon, police say.
Family identified the victims as Hazel and Danni Walker. The victims and suspect all lived together at the apartment complex. They also say the shooter, a 43-year-old man from Dearborn Heights, had a history of mental health issues.
"I was talking to (Hazel) before all this happened," said Mattie Dunlap, Hazel's sister. "She was a part of me. I miss her.
"Danni was the love of everbody's life. Everyone she met, she touched their heart."
According to police, the shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. Michigan State Police, also investigating the incident, say the suspect shot and killed the two victims.
When officers arrived on the scene, the suspect was standing on a second story balcony overlooking the apartment's parking lot, while holding an AR-style rifle. Dearborn Heights police, from a distance, told the suspect to drop the weapon. That's when the suspect shot at police. Officers gave the suspect another order to drop the weapon. The suspect then shot at police a second time, which is when they returned fire, striking and killing the suspect.
"He started shooting at the officers," said neighbor Patrick McCullough. He let off at least five or six rounds at the officers."
When officers entered the building, they discovered the bodies of the two victims. There were no other reported injuries.
The investigating is ongoing.
