Police: Gas station clerk assaulted with hammer, held hostage in Romulus

ROMULUS, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Romulus Police Department is investigating an assault and robbery at a gas station on Middlebelt.

On March 10 around 4:15 a.m., officers responded to an open 911 call coming from the Amoco gas station on 9999 Middlebelt Road.

The female clerk victim reported she had been assaulted by the suspect with a piece of firewood and a hammer. According to police, the woman was held hostage. She was able to lock herself in the bathroom where she was later rescued by Romulus police officers.

The suspect, a state of Missouri resident, was arrested on the scene, police say.

The victim suffered multiple injuries, was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn and is now in stable condition.

Police say the suspect and victim did not know each other previously.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned Thursday, March 12 at the 34th District Court in Romulus.

A GoFundMe has been set up to raise money for the victim.
