DETROIT (AP) — A journalist says he's running for the Detroit City Council after leaving the Detroit Free Press.

M.L. Elrick has filed paperwork to create a candidate committee for the 2021 election.

Elrick won a Pulitzer Prize for exposing scandals involving Kwame Kilpatrick, who resigned as Detroit mayor in 2008.

Elrick says voters would get a watchdog who tries to ensure government works.

Besides working at the Free Press, he has been a reporter at two Detroit-area TV stations.
