PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) — Pontiac High School is closed Friday after a teen was shot and is currently hospitalized.

Detectives are searching for gunmen who opened fire near Herrington Elementary School. They say they found a 17-year-old boy shot multiple times in the legs and head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Two unknown suspects with vague descriptions took off at 1:45 a.m. but left behind a .40 caliber handgun. A handgun and cell phone were also found on the victim. Multiple shell casings along with other evidence are now being analyzed. Deputies are working to determine a motive from the shooting.

In a letter sent to parents, Pontiac School District Superintendent Kelley Williams said the incident has "caused a great deal of despair and concern throughout Pontiac High School." The school will be closed Friday due to "a number of problems" within the building.

Classes will resume on Monday, Sept. 30. Counseling and support will be on site at the high school for all students and staff affected by the tragedy. A community meeting will be held Saturday, September 28 at the Hopewell Baptist Church on Oakland Avenue in Pontiac. It will be students only at noon, followed by a concerned citizen's meeting at 1:30 p.m.
