(WXYZ) — A proposal that would protect your personal electronic data has passed in Michigan.

Proposal 2 aimed to change the state’s constitution and move Michigan into the 21st century by requiring law enforcement agencies to get a search warrant to access someone’s electronic data or electronic communications.

It did so under the same conditions that are already required for the government to get a search warrant to search someone’s house or seize their things.

The proposal had support from both Democrats and Republicans, and was also supported by several groups including the American Civil Liberties Union and Michigan State Police.
