A Detroit police officer has been charged with larceny from a motor vehicle and misconduct in the office.

Forty-year-old Michael Merritt was arraigned Friday.

Detroit police say Merritt was being surveillance by their integrity unit, when they observed him steal from a recovery vehicle at the station.

Chief James Craig would not say what Merritt was being investigated for.

“It's always tragic when an officer makes a decision to violate the oath of office. It's tragic when you think it's a right to wear this badge, it's a privilege and an honor. He obviously forgot who he works for, he works for the people,” Craig says.

Merritt was placed on a $25,000 personal bond, he has been suspended from the department.
