The city of Detroit is more than doubling its amount of summer fun centers and recreation centers for children.
Beginning Monday, Detroit children ages 6 to 17 will have the ability to check out free activities at 27 summer fun and recreation centers across the city. Previously, there were only 11.
They will run from July 10 through Aug. 11 in a five-week pilot program, which could extend beyond the summer.
The 27 recreation and summer fun centers are the largest number operated by the city in more than 10 years.
"Detroiters all remember when rec centers across this city shut down," Duggan said. "If we are going to build a stronger Detroit, we've got to focus on creating safe spaces for our youth and opportunities for them to be successful."
The 16 recreation centers were shut down due to funding cuts from 2006-2013.
All of the 16 summer fun centers will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will be staffed by the city and Detroit schools.
There will be indoor and outdoor athletic activities, arts & crafts, media centers and more. They will also provide three meals to kids throughout the day.
