A trendy new store has now popped into Midtown, making Detroit its tenth location in the world.
Filson, an Alaskan outfitter, which has the same parent company as Shinola, is now located on Canfield.
Both stores, owned by Bedrock, are on the same block.
“We’ve been waiting to come to Detroit for a long, long time,” said Bedrock president Steve Bock. “So we are ecstatic to be opening our 10th store here.”
Those behind the outfitter say Detroit is the perfect location for a new retail location. With roots in cold weather climates, the brand was created 119 years ago during the Klondike Gold Rush. Brutally cold temperatures are definitely something Detroiters know all about.
“The core of everything we do is outdoor,” said Bock. “So you can see bags are very important to our business… outerwear. We really expanded the brand in such a way that, today, not only do you get your heavier, outerwear which is what we are really famous for, but you can get products that really cater to what you need.”
Filson representatives say their brand is not only geared to outdoors enthusiasts. With quality watches, bags, apparel, coats, and accessories, the company is catering to people jobs in the woods to Wall Street.
“Our brand has done very well across the United States but primarily in the northern tier - the Pacific Northwest all the way over to New York, up to Boston and we have done very well in this city and in this state.”
Filson opens to the public Friday.
The store will also have live music from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
