A Detroit firefighter is in stable but serious condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital after he was overcome by smoke while responding to a commercial building fire on the west side Saturday night.
Firefighters were called to the three-alarm fire at the building on Michigan Avenue and Martin Street just before 7:30 p.m. Chief John King said at one point there were up to 12 different companies battling the flames. King said one firefighter had to be rushed to the hospital when he got disoriented and ran out of air while he was helping to stretch the hose line to the back of the building.
The fire destroyed the warehouse next to a dollar store on the south side of Michigan Ave. Residents in the area said the building housed a roofing and siding company until a few years ago. They said the owners of the dollar store had been using the building for storage.
Firefighters were still on scene at 11 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
