A former Detroit Public Schools teacher was sentenced on Monday for charges stemming from an improper relationship with a student.

Zachary Taylor, 27, was charged with accosting a child for immoral purposes and distributing obscene material to a minor. He was facing a maximum prison time of six years, but was sentenced to five years of probation after a plea deal.

Taylor did not address the court during his sentencing, and his attorney said he commends the judge and prosecutor for "resolving this in a just and fair way."

According to court reports, Taylor sent sexually explicit text messages to a middle school student, and also met her at a Red Roof Inn Motel where they reportedly cuddled.

He worked for Teach for America and was assigned to Clippert Academy. His attorney said he resigned from DPS when charges were filed.
