Students brawl at East English Village Prep

Posted

An out of control fight that broke out inside a crowded Detroit high school was all caught on camera.

Now, the Detroit Public Schools Police Department is investigating what exactly led to the nasty scuffle.

Sources with the school district says three students were detained after the fight.

In the cell phone video that is now circulating on social media, you can hear and see the chaos unfolding inside a Detroit public school. Fists are flying and there seems to be no sign of anyone who can stop it.

A student shot the video of the  brawl that the district says took place early Wednesday morning at East English Village Preparatory Academy on Cadieux.

The school is home to grades 9-12 and they do have security guards present. However, in the dramatic video it appears one of the guards himself becomes one of the victims.

You can see that as the crowd clears, the security guard is the last one left down, apparently injured, on the ground.

The fight video is also not the first of its kind.  Many recall former Detroit high school football star Jayru Campbell, once caught on tape body slamming a security guard - also inside school grounds.

After this incident, students were on social media saying they'd even heard homecoming events could be canceled as a result of the recent violence.

So far, the district won't confirm any events being canceled.

DPS released the following statement regarding the incident:

"Although there was a fight that occurred yesterday at East English Village Preparatory Academy, it was immediately contained by DPS Police and security personnel and the school day continued without further incident. There were no injuries suffered by any student or staff.

This is the first fight to occur this school year at EEVPA. While incidents of this nature happen in schools in Detroit, as well as our suburban communities, it is important to note that they are not an indicator of the overall level of school safety. In fact, DPS reported s 29% decline in the number of crimes reported and arrests made compared to the previous school year, with the number of reports/incidents dropping by more than 300 from the 2013-14 to the 2014-15 school year.

Additionally, DPS is working diligently to implement improved climate and culture programs districtwide with specialized staff training on Restorative Practices, positive behavior interventions and student training including, Crime Stoppers’ Project Safe Campus, which is a key initiative of the District’s Teen Leadership Institute (TLI)."
