DETROIT (WXYZ) — A despicable crime is victimizing Detroit children who rely on a youth center for free mentoring and after school activities.

A temporary heater is being used at the youth development center. The reason, thieves ripped off equipment from the roof needed to keep the place warm.

Cell phone video taken from the roof of the Say Detroit Play Center at Van Dyke and 7 Mile shows some of the damage left behind by cold hearted thieves.

Director Herb Hayden says in addition to the cost of replacing what they took they’re now having to pay a company to rent heaters.

Herb tells us the discovery on Thursday left many with a sinking feeling as temperatures around metro Detroit fall.

He’s also struggling to understand why someone would target a place that helps children with tutoring, sports, music, and arts.

The center tells us their security company is also going through a video monitoring system to help figure out who’s behind this all.

For now, this Detroiter is promising to keep helping kids despite this setback at the hands of some heartless crooks.

The director is filing a claim with his insurance company and police are also investigating. If you know who could be responsible, call them right away.
