Volunteers work to bust blight in Brightmoor

Posted

An army of volunteers spent the day attacking a Detroit neighborhood with the goal of transforming the area.

More than 400 volunteers from McCann Detroit took the day off from their office jobs to fight blight.

"If you look down the street, you don't even see the sidewalk," said Mel Smart. "When we are done, you are going to have curbs and sidewalks."

This is the second year the company has teamed up with the Motor City Blight Busters to make a difference.

Over the next year, the group will be targeting 14 city blocks in the Brightmoor and Old Redford area. They plan on removing overgrowth, cutting back trees and removing debris, including tires and illegally dumped trash.

Once the blight is gone, the hope is redevelopment will follow.

"Our goal is to save the world, but we are starting with Detroit," said John George with Motor City Blight Busters.
