Woman killed, child injured after shooting on Detroit's west side

Jacqueline Pritchett, the Detroit police deputy chief of West Side Operations, told media that police got the call around 6:40 a.m. for shots fired at a residence on Whitcomb Ave. near Tireman St.

Upon arrival, officers found a woman fatally shot and a child suffering from a gunshot wound. That child was rushed to the hospital, where they are now in critical condition.

"We have a moral obligation to keep our children safe. Unknown is the relationship but however if it was a conflict, we need to learn how to deal with conflict other than gunfire," said Pritchett.

Police say the victim is a Jane Doe but is believed to be in her 20s. Neighbors tell us that the victim was a Black woman.

"6 o'clock this morning, I heard one gun shot and my significant other came to the door and he said it was a body laying in the street. I came to the door and seen it was the girl next door. It looked like a bag was under her but civilians pulled over and turned her over and it was a baby under her," said one neighbor who asked not to be identified.

The neighbor says she saw the shooter standing over the woman before he took off running down an alley.

"It was scary. I didn’t know if he was going to come back or if somebody else was involved. It definitely has me reeling right now," the neighbor said. "It’s just so unreal and these kids are young. It’s just tragic and then the baby. It’s just fresh in my mind, her laying there, her eyes open like nobody could do nothing for her."

Another neighbor who happened to be returning from an early morning gas station run says she jumped in, attempting to render CPR after seeing the two lying in the street.

"I was coming back from playing the lottery," the woman said. "I seen a lady. She was just laying there in the middle of the street so I thought she might have been drunk or something. So, I stopped and I went to get out and I seen it was blood."

Investigators say the suspect and the victim knew each other, and that it's a possible domestic violence incident. The relationship between the victim and the child is unknown at this time.

The suspect turned himself in at the 6th precinct this morning, so there is believed to be no threat to the public for this incident.

Neighbors say the situation is not only sad but frustrating.

"I open the door to take my daughter to school and I see the police and I hear there’s a dead woman in the street and that’s the third time I’ve heard there’s a dead person in my area. So it really makes me frustrated," said another neighbor who didn't give her name. "Unfortunately after today I’ve been having a lot of anxiety this morning and I’m like every day we woke up with a drama. Every day we have something."

At last check, the little boy remained in critical but stable condition. Police are still investigating the circumstances around the shooting. Anyone with information should call Detroit Police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800- SPEAK-UP.
