There’s outrage from the community after we exposed private, under the table cash payoffs.
It happened during a public meeting where owners of the Ambassador Bridge are pushing for a second span.
There are new questions about civil rights possibly being violated, and what the true cost of a new bridge could be.
At the recent public forum, the potential of a second privately owned international bridge between the US and Canada was a hot topic. Many turned out to tell the coast guard why they should or shouldn't issue a permit to the current owners of the Ambassador Bridge.
But, away from this meeting at a gas station around the corner, we learned the real reason why some came out to speak. We even saw the cash up close.
This discovery was news to the Coast Guard, who we've since alerted. So far, they're not commenting.
But community leaders and a local civil rights attorney have had plenty to say.
At the meeting, the bridge people gave their own explanation - one that leaves us wondering why the need for cash stuffed in envelopes and names being scratched off a list.
The bridge owners also say they aren't going to be discouraged by the state of Michigan building another bridge from Detroit to Canada.
