Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel says instinct kicked in Tuesday night as he was driving down 24 Mile Rd. near Garfield in Macomb Township.

He saw a truck in front of him plow into a minivan and then keep going. He safely followed the driver, got his plate number and called 911.

The former Macomb County Sheriff following the driver for more than four miles while staying on the phone with a dispatcher.

Vito Agrusa, 41, finally pulled into a parking lot where Hackel approached him, asking to get out of the truck and then took his keys.

Deputies arrived moments later. Agrusa allegedly had a blood alcohol level of .25, which is more than three times the legal limit. He was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

As for the car he hit, we're told a family of three was inside, but only one person suffered minor injuries.
