Farmington Hills police say the situation that unfolded early Friday afternoon at Heritage Park is over.
Police say they were initially called to the park on reports of a despondent man in a vehicle.
As a precautionary measure, all campers and visitors at the park were safely evacuated.
Police say officers made attempts to communicate with the man inside the vehicle, but that he ultimately took his own life with a firearm.
Police are currently conducting a follow-up investigation and the park is expected to be closed for several hours.
More than 80 kids attending a summer camp program at the park were taken by bus to the Costick Center. Parents of children attending the camp can pick them up there at the normal time. The center is located at 28600 Eleven Mile Rd.
