Pontiac man charged in carjacking of elderly man

A 30-year-old Pontiac man is behind bars after carjacking an elderly man in Washington Township.

A 78-year-old man pulled into a parking lot at the Macomb Orchard Trail on West Road West of Van Dyke to go for a hike, Sunday around 11:00 am. He was approached by a stranger who said he was stranded.

The stranger then asked for money, but the elderly man said he did not have any cash.

The elderly man then attempted to walk on the trail but he was followed by the stranger. The stranger then pulled out a knife and demanded money.

The victim repeated he didn’t have any money, but ended up giving the man his keys and cell phone.

After the attacker drove off in the victim’s Ford F-150 pick up truck, the elderly man flagged down a 46-year-old Washington Township woman.

The woman took the victim in her car and began to follow the carjacker. According to police, he did not get far.

The Good Samaritan and victim found the pick up at the end of Wallington Street with the thief standing nearby. After the woman approached the guy, he handed the victim’s keys and cell phone back.

The thief has been identified as Michael Garrett. He was arrested and is now charged with Carjacking and Resisting And Obstructing Arrest.
