WALLED LAKE, Mich. (WXYZ) — A $316 million bond is up for a vote in Walled Lake schools, but unlike most large bonds - this one won’t require a tax increase.

Four previous Walled Lake schools’ bonds are almost paid off, which means the district can make a lot of repairs and upgrades while still lowering taxes.

They just need your vote.

For many schools in the district the need is impossible to ignore.

At Dublin Elementary School, for example, the siding is falling off, in several places the roof is crumbling, old heating and ventilation, classrooms have breaker boxes instead of light switches, and it’s not ADA compliant.

At Western High School we saw significant water damage on the floor and in several spots on the ceiling from a failing roof. The high school gym has no A/C and the building, in general, is outdated.

Renderings have been released showing what the renovated and upgraded high school and new elementary schools would look like if the bond was passed.

The bond would ensure all schools in the district have updated technology and enhanced security systems.

The vote is Tuesday.
