Accused axe killer can't remember man's murder

Jesse Gunderson, 26, is charged with First Degree Murder for allegedly hitting his step-grandfather in the head with an axe, killing him.

While some relatives say it was a cold-blooded murder, others suggest Gunderson will use a temporary insanity defense because he's told his mother that he has no recollection of the crime.

Gunderson is expected to be arraigned in the 29th District Court at 9:00 am on Tuesday.

Saturday, around 5:00 pm, Gunderson allegedly killed Dan Dart, 58, in the driveway of the home where Dart resided with his wife Marian, Gunderson's grandmother.

A relative told 7 Action News that moments after the killing, Gunderson walked into the house and said he had just killed Dan.

Dart's siblings and other relatives wonder why Gunderson left a good job working at a hospital in Fresno and showed up, unannounced, on Dan and Marian's doorsteps about a month ago.

It's unclear why Gunderson left California. But just days before the murder, his mother came to Michigan to try to help him figure out his plans for the future.

Dart, a retired-disabled Ford worker, did not have any biological children, but we're told considered Marian's children and grandchildren to be the same to him.
