VIDEO: Man points long gun at police officer

Posted

7 Action News has obtained police dash cam video showing a dangerous encounter during a traffic stop in Livonia.

Around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 10, Livonia police received a 911 call about a white Ford Explorer that was driving erratically and swerving in and out of traffic.

A police officer pulled over the vehicle on Lyndon, just east of Farmington Road. A second officer, who's out of view of the camera, arrived as back up.

In the video, you can see just how quickly things took a dangerous turn.

Just moments after a Livonia police officer walked up to the vehicle, the driver points a long gun out the window and at police. The officers fired and, that's when investigators say the driver, 23-year-old Joseph Carlton, pulled the gun back inside.

The police officers were not injured.

We're told after several verbal commands for Carlton to get out of the vehicle without the gun, he did. Police say Carlton was hit by the gunfire, but he did not suffer life threatening injuries. He's now locked up and facing several charges that include felonious assault, felon in possession and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

Livonia police said they couldn't comment on the case since it's now with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Carlton is being held on a $1,000,000 cash bond.
