(WXYZ) — Richmond Schools have extended their holiday break after several district servers were attacked by a ransomware virus.

The viral attack happened over the holiday break, officials say. The virus has affected critical operating systems in the district, including but not limited to heating, telephones, copiers, and classroom technology.

District personnel and network server contractors have been working to resolve the problem.

School officials say no student or staff information has been compromised, but the process to fix the issue is very time-consuming and is not expected to be completed by Thursday.

As a result, school will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 2 and Friday, Jan. 3 for a building problem, officials say.
