ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WXYZ) — A road worker has been killed after being struck by a vehicle on eastbound I-94 near 9 Mile Road in St. Clair Shores on Monday. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, police say.

The deadly crash happened around 3 p.m.
Michigan State Police are currently on the scene investigating. The freeway is expected to remain closed for several hours.
The 26-year-old worker from Chesterfield was killed near an orange road service vehicle, police say. He has been identified as Zachary Morisette.
Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel responded to the deadly crash with this statement: “This afternoon we were made aware of a fatality involving an employee with our Department of Roads. Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of this individual. The County is committed to working with the Michigan State Police to determine how this tragedy happened.”
Police believe a white, large box truck may be responsible for the deadly crash. There will likely be damage to the side of the vehicle.

Diane Cross with the Michigan Department of Transportation says this is the first worker killed this year across the state of Michigan. However, there are some small cities and townships outside of metro Detroit that may have had worker deaths that weren't reported to the stated.
In 2019, three road workers were killed.
