Salvation Army of Metro Detroit kicks off 2018 Red Kettle Campaign

It's that time of the year to usher in the giving spirit. 

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is kicking off its Red Kettle Campaign -- with a fundraising goal of $8.2 million.

The organization says the funds will go to initiatives providing social services in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties. 

Here's a variety of Red Kettle events open to the public will take throughout the holiday season: 

- The 2018 Salvation Army Red Kettle kickoff event will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16 at Campus Martius Park featuring a performance by Detroit’s Larry Callahan and Selected of God, a choir featured in a Super Bowl commercial and America’s Got Talent.

- The Salvation Army and the Royal Park Hotel will celebrate 10 years of gingerbread with a special unveiling event at the Rochester hotel at 10:30 a.m. on National Gingerbread Cookie day, Wednesday, Nov. 21, featuring festive Christmas music, hot cocoa and tasty treats and a public viewing of the eight-foot tall candied locomotive.

- Celebrity Bell Ringer Day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 1 featuring local print, online, television and radio personalities spreading holiday cheer by ringing bells alongside The Salvation Army’s iconic red kettles.

- Red Wings for Red Kettles will return from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7 with Detroit Red Wings players, alumni and staff serving as bell ringers to raise money for the nonprofit’s STRIVE floor hockey program.

Residents can offer their support by donating nickels and dimes in red kettles at storefronts through metro Detroit including:
