DETROIT (WXYZ) — It's not unusual to pass by the beautiful garden space at the corner of Minock Street and Whitlock Avenue in Detroit's Warrendale neighborhood and see Barb Matney and her husband Joe working hard.

The Matneys, with the help of volunteers, have dedicated much of their time to creating a beautiful space for people, including school children, to enjoy.

And now the "In Memory Of Community Garden" and the park across the street have surveillance cameras that are part of Project Green Light. And adding the cameras that Detroit Police can quickly review was something Barb knew she wanted to see in their neighborhood spot.

Despite people doubting it would happen and that there was no special pricing for nonprofit groups, Barb was confident that, one day, they'd be a Green Light location.

"I was like trust me, it's going to happen," Barb said. "When we first started, we were watching all the kids out here playing and they were playing in these vacant lots full of trash. They were playing in the vacant houses that were very dangerous. And when we grew up, we had a safe, clean place to play and these kids today deserve the same thing."

Coming up Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m., there will be a ribbon cutting celebration at the new park. There will be cider, donuts, candy for trick-or-treaters (kids are asked to wear costumes!), and a pumpkin patch for young children. The address is 6548 Minock in Detroit.
