St. Clair Shores dentist donates candy to troops

Posted

It's no surprise dentists don't want you eating all your Halloween candy. It can be bad for your teeth, but one dentist in St. Clair Shores is taking the sweets and doing something sweet with them.

Dr. Steven Wainess promises its all for a good cause.

He said, "Operation Gratitude which is an organization that packages them in care packages for servicemen around the world."

Dr. Wainess is hosting a Halloween candy buy back event this Sunday.

Kids and adults will get a dollar for every pound of candy they donate and the candy will be given to servicemen and woman.

"We have a lot of veterans and active servicemen who come and they bring a lot of old military vehicles and kids can climb up in them and take their pictures."

The event is meant to be fun and a win-win. The candy will be given away for a nice cause and children will eat less of it.

"It's the ones who constantly eat candy all day long, that's the bad thing."

Last year, they received 925 pounds of candy and this year they are hoping to raise that number to 1,000 pounds.

Each child walks away with a candy-less goodie bag.

"They can write letters and draw pictures for the servicemen so that goes in there too."

Most children are willing to give up their goodies.

He said, "Usually, they are pretty good about it. I've been surprised, most of them are very happy about it."

The event takes place:
November 6th 1pm to 5pm
Dr. Steven Wainess Office
30140 Harper Avenue
St. Clair Shores, MI

If you cannot make the event, they will accept candy all week.
