Police have reported two instances of child neglect in Sterling Heights involving mothers leaving children in cars.

In one instance on March 16, a caller advised that a child was sleeping in an unattended vehicle in the Meijer parking lot. The car wasn't running and the driver's door was unlocked, police said.

The mother stated she was only inside for 10 minutes, she locked the vehicle and that it was running when she went inside.

She was given a citation and the Dept. of Health and Human Services was notified.

In another incident on March 17, officers were dispatched to the parking lot of Lakeside Mall for two children left unattended in a vehicle.

Officers said they observed two children playing on tablets in a car that was locked and not running.

The mother returned to the car and said she was gone for no more than 10-15 minutes. She was given a ticket and DHHS was notified.
