Suspect in custody after smash-and-grab at Walgreens in Eastpointe

Posted

Eastpointe Police say a man is in custody following a smash-and-grab and subsequent police chase that occurred early Tuesday.

Around 12:45 a.m., police responded to an alarm at the Walgreen's store on Gratiot Road.

Upon arrival, officers found that a group used a stolen pickup truck to break through the drive-thru window, and took two safes.

Police say they chased the suspect vehicle into Detroit, where they stopped it in the area of Grayton and Nottingham.

Four people in the truck ran away, but police caught up to one man and took him into custody.

Police recovered both safes, which contained narcotics.

Officials do not know if the incident is connected to the nearly 20 recent smash-and-grab incidents that have occurred in metro Detroit recently. Police continue to investigate.
