(WXYZ) — Foodies have taken dinner with friends to a higher level. Instead of the traditional wine pairing parties of the past, cannabis-infused foods and parties are becoming more popular since Michigan legalized recreational marijuana in November.
7 Action News Reporter Alan Campbell sat down at a dinner party recently to see what's going on in the cannabis culinary world.
Jake Abraham has been a chef for 20 years and he also owns Sticky, a pot dispensary in Ypsilanti. He and his wife, Ashleigh, are pretty busy, so when they get together with friends, they make it count.
"I love to entertain, I love to host, so does Jake," Ashleigh said.
Last week, she invited six girlfriends over, and Jake solicited Jerry Millen, the owner of Greenhouse Dispensary, to help prepare a cannabis culinary feast.
"So we got you guys started with the sativa. It's kind of a peppier high, it won't put you in the couch and keep you guys hungry and eating," Jake told the group of women.
They use things like CBD-infused olive oil, which they use or fish and great for bread. The dinners are unique, layering the night with both pot smoking and cannabis-infused courses.
Other food includes fish infused with cannabis butter, asparagus with CBD olive oil to balance the THC from the fish, and more.
"No hangover by the way, just saying. I have three kids, not going to lie," Ashleigh said.
"I have three kids as well and so, yeah, hey, this is relaxation time for mom, I'll tell you that. I love it," another guest said.
Ashleigh and her friends don't partake in the parties when the kids are home. It's strictly for adults.
As the night started to wrap up, Jake brought out a chocolate fondue, infused with about 200 milligrams, with strawberries, pretzel roads and marshmallow.
The Abrahams always make sure their guests have a designated driver or plan on taking an Uber or Lyft, that way no one is driving while high.
Jake says any CBD infused product should not contain THC, but always check the labels. On top of that, food with THC can be very potent, so do your research, talk to your caregiver or dispensary before you experiment with cannabis cooking.
