FENTON, Mich. (WXYZ) — Superintendent Dr. Adam Hartley at Fenton Area Public Schools says this is the first time anything like this has happened, and they are taking immediate action.
This comes after a classroom photo that’s offended many began circulating on social media Thursday night.
“We have launched an internal investigation,” says Dr. Hartley.
In the photo at the center of the situation is a high school teacher standing with senior students dressed as “Chollos.” The term is know for being a derogatory word, or slang making reference to a person of Hispanic decent.
While the senior prank has become very public, there has also been a public response with a letter being mailed out to parents.
In the letter, the district stresses the serious nature of what took place, and steps being taken to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
So far, no timeline is being given on how long the internal investigation will take.
In the meantime, students in that photo will be receiving cultural sensitive awareness education.
