(WXYZ) — A pitbull mix was shot in front of her 9-year-old owner by a police officer Friday on Detroit's east side.
The Detroit Police Department says they received a call about a vicious animal on the 14700 block of Coram Street. When the cop arrived and got out of his patrol car, the dog charged him. As a result the officer fired one shot at the animal.
"The officer followed protocol," said DPD spokesperson Sergeant Kirkwood.
According to Detroit Dog Rescue, the 9-year-old reportedly asked for help to return his lost dog, 15-month-old Stormy, home and that is when he heard gunshots.
Animal Rescue officials say Stormy is currently in the hospital. No word yet on the dog's condition.
