A train conductor is seriously injured following a crash Thursday on railroad tracks between Mound and Van Dyke at 15 Mile Road.

The conductor exited the train in order to manually close the roadway at 15 Mile Road due to a crossing gate issue. A gray Chevy Impala traveling east on 15 Mile then struck the conductor.

Police say the conductor was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition with serious, but not immediately life-threatening, injuries. The driver of the Impala, a 19-year-old, had minor injuries.

The incident is still being investigated but police say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor.

Fifteen Mile Road was completely closed for two and a half hours but is now open with the exception of one eastbound lane.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Sgt. Carion of the Sterling Heights Traffic Safety Bureau at 586-446-2948.
