TROY (WXYZ) — A woman, who shares her home with two nuns, got a first hand look at the kindness of local police officers. When their mailbox was ruined due to a reckless driver, Troy police wanted to do a good deed.

Lynn has lived in the home since the 1940s, and Sister Jo Ann Lucas has lived there since the 1970s!

Over the years, they’ve had their mailbox destroyed at least six times by reckless drivers on Wattles Road in Troy.

“I don’t know why they always hit our mailbox,” said Sister Jo Ann Lucas.

The latest incident happened last week but the driver took off. The women called police to file a report.

“Very bad luck. How can this happen to one person,” said Troy Police Officer Zachary Yeomans.

When the officers heard their story, they came back a few days later on their time, with a new mailbox purchased on their dime.

“It’s like we made real friends,” Sister Jo Ann said.

With the help of a next door neighbor, who is a police officer in another town, the men built the women a new mailbox.

“As we were taking out the old one and putting the new one in, we saw remnants of the previous five or six that were there,” Troy Police Officer John Julian explained.

Lynn and Sister Jo Ann offered the men money for their time and effort but the police officers would not accept it.

“Feeling overwhelmed for their graciousness that they showed to us but we are just happy to help as Troy police officers here,” Yeomans explained.

The women wanted Troy’s police chief to know about this effort, so they wrote them a letter.

“And now we have a new mailbox to mail the letter in,” Sister Jo Ann added.
