U of D Jesuit High School and Academy student wins Scripps Regional Spelling Bee

(WXYZ_ — "Avaricious" – that was the winning word from this year's Scripps Regional Spelling Bee.

There were 73 spellers who competed Sunday at the Charles H. Wright Museum in Detroit, and 12-year-old Frank Salzeider took the trophy.

Salzeider is a student at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy. The runner up was 12-year-old Zaara Noor, who attends Davison Elementary and Middle School.

Salzeider will go on to compete in the National Scripps Spelling Bee on May 27. He'll be representing WXYZ Channel 7 and Wayne County.
