U of M considers adding classes to curb drinking

Posted

This week Playboy ranked the University of Michigan as a top 10 party school. Now there is an interesting initiative to change that.

After school leaders identified student drinking as a problem on campus, the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs has floated the idea of scheduling more classes on Fridays.

Traditionally many U of M students and professors have enjoyed four day work weeks - allowing for three days of revelry the theory goes.

But would adding a 5th day curb partying? Students are skeptical.

"Its college, there is always gonna be a party culture," said one.

"If they have classes in the afternoon, the night is still free. They have all weekend to do homework," added another.

"People go out every day of the week. I don't think that would change anything," said another student.

The university has already taken steps to present a more academic front - beefing up partnerships with Ann Arbor police and promising to crack down on students who repeatedly violate student conduct codes.

As for that schedule change, whether it actually comes to fruition remains to be seen.
