(WXYZ) — Uber launched in January a new safety feature that allows riders to further verify that they're getting into the correct vehicle.
The four-digit PIN code verification is sent to a rider to present to their driver before starting a trip, the company says. This extra step helps ensure riders are absolutely sure they have the correct Uber driver.

“We are constantly working and innovating to provide riders and drivers with the tools they need to help ensure a safe and reliable experience,” said Sachin Kansal, Uber’s Head of Safety Products. “This new feature will provide peace of mind that you are getting into the right vehicle.”
Riders can opt-in to get the service through their Uber app. Just go to settings and tap "Verify Your Ride."
Here's how it works:
Riders will choose whether they want their PIN to be active for every trip or just trips at night from 9 to 6 p.m.

When the Uber driver is headed to a location, the rider will receive a four-digit code. When the Uber driver arrives, before getting into the vehicle the rider will tell the driver the code. That code is then put into the app by the driver which initiates the trip. Uber says the trip can't start without the correct code.
The PIN feature is now available in the United States and Canada.
