DETROIT (WXYZ) — Video posted to Facebook on Friday afternoon showed a dog viciously attacking a mailman on a street in Detroit.
We're told the dog attack happened in the 20000 block of Ardmore on Friday afternoon, and a Detroit Fire Department spokesperson said the mailman was bleeding from his hand and had his knee banged up. We're told that the dog also did bite through the boot but the extent of his injuries are not known.
The video shows several witnesses trying to get the dog off the man using a pipe, a steering wheel lock and a broom.
A spokesperson for the United States Postal Service said they are working with Detroit police and also investigating the incident.
"We are deeply grateful to the concerned citizens who came the aid of our letter carrier," the USPS spokesperson said. Unfortunately attacks such as this provide the postal service an opportunity to remind dog owners that it is their responsibility to restrain their pet in order to avoid attacks against our employees while they are in performance of their duties."
USPS said that people are urged to keep your dog in a separate room and close the door when a mail carrier delivers the package, teach kids and family members not to take mail directly when a pet is nearby and much more. The service also said that if a mail carrier feels threatened, the owner can be asked to pickup mail at a nearby post office.
