LEXINGTON, Ky. (WXYZ) — Surveillance video obtained by WKYT in Lexington, Kentucky, possibly shows the moment a wrong-way driver enters the interstate minutes before the crash that took the lives of the Abbas family.
The video was captured by a business in the area.
A 911 call came into police on Sunday, Jan. 6, reporting that a vehicle, which is believed to have been driven by Joey Lee Bailey, 41, entering I-75 in the wrong direction. According to WKYT, police have not yet confirmed that detail in their investigation.
The WKYT reportstates that police received report of the white pickup traveling in the wrong direction just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday. The crash happened around the 106 mile marker, which is roughly seven miles south of where the 911 report was made from the Paris Pike exit.
The white pickup truck hit head-on the Abbas family's SUV, killing the entire family, which included 42-year-old Issam Abbas, 38-year-old Rima Abbas, 14-year-old Ali Abbas, 13-year-old Isabella Abbas and 7-year-old Giselle Abbas. The family was returning to Michigan from a vacation in Florida.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, and the family will be buried at noon Tuesday at Islamic Memorial Gardens in Westland. Commemoration services will be conducted Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Islamic Center of America.
The family is asking for donations to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, in lieu of flowers or other donations. While they are working to set up a special donation site with MADD, checks can be sent to 1739 W. Big Beaver Road, Troy, Michigan 48084 until it is online.
