Washtenaw County warning families after two reports of attempted abductions

As the weather warms up, law enforcement across Washtenaw County are warning families about child abductions.

There have been two stranger danger alerts issued in the county in two weeks.

In Ann Arbor, University of Michigan Police are searching for a man with a very distinct head of hair, it’s gray and styled “like Albert Einstein.”

Just Thursday, a 10-year-old girl reported this man tried to lure her into his black four-door car. Police say it happened around 8:15 a.m. at a graduate student complex on University of Michigan's north campus.

"She noticed a small black car stop, back up and pull into the parking lot and approach fairly close to her. He looked at her, he gestured with his hand as if to summon her over to the vehicle,” said University Police Chief Bob Neumann.

He tells us the girl was outside waiting for her ride to school.

In Ypsilanti Twp., Washtenaw County deputies are looking for a white man in his 40s, driving a dark-colored sedan.

The Washtenaw Co. Sheriff’s Office says an 11-year-old boy reported a man drove up to him while he was walking home from the school bus stop. The man offered the boy candy and a ride home.

Investigators at both agencies say the children did the right thing and ran away, seeking help.

Chief Neumann does not believe the two incidents are related, telling us there are usually more stranger danger reports when the weather warms up because children are playing outside.

"When there are a lot of kids outside we get reports of more suspicious behavior around playgrounds and areas where there are children's activities."

As the weather warms up, police remind you to watch your children outside.

Police are also asking parents to talk to their children about strangers, warning them to never approach someone they do not know.

He advises children to run away and find a trusting adult to help.
