(WXYZ) — Oxford native Nathan Gerbe is the shortest player in the NHL. At only 5-feet-4, Gerbe, who is playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets, took on a much taller player in Wednesday night's game.
Gerbe had a massive hit on Philadelphia Flyer's captain Claude Giroux near the end of the second period. After, Grioux's teammate Travis Sanheim confronted Gerbe, but Gerbe threw the first punch.
Sanheim, who is 6-feet-3, tussled with Gerbe, but was ultimately taken down before any actual punches were thrown.
Gerbe was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2005 NHL Draft and debuted for the Sabres in 2008. He has played 10 total years in the NHL and appeared in 422 games. He only appeared in 2 games in 2017-18, and his last major stint in the NHL came in 2015-16 with the Carolina Hurricanes.
