Expect to see bigger numbers on your 2019 WSU billing statement.
Wayne State's Board of Governors approved a general operating budget of $655 million for the 2019 fiscal year.
The approval called for a 2.9 percent tuition increase, translating to $10.84 per credit hour for all undergraduate students.
But there's a plus side:
1. School officials say the increase will stay below the state's tuition restraint cap of 3.8 percent.
2. The overall operating budget includes a 7 percent increase in financial aid, bringing the institutionally funded financial aid to $79.4 million.
WSU will offer new initiatives to help students cover the now rising cost of tuition:
- The Warrior Way Back program.
- The Warrior Senior Sprint Program.
- A 50 percent tuition discount for active military students.
- Continuation of student semester parking pass discounts.
Board of Governors Chair Sandy Hughes O'Brien offered comment on the increase:
"Although it never feels good to raise tuition, I’m pleased we were able to limit the increase because our students feel the effects of any increase, big or small. It’s our job as a Board to help make the cost of attendance as affordable and accessible as possible for all students. That’s why we’re excited about our new financial aid programs. This budget will allow us to sustain the excellence of Wayne State and continue to increase the value of a Wayne State degree.”
