(WXYZ) — Westbound I-696 is closed at I-275 due to a fatal crash, 7 Action News has learned.
According to Michigan State Police, they were called to the scene of a rollover found the driver trapped inside the car with fire crews working on getting him out.
After removing him from the vehicle, police say the 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the driver was at fault and tried to pass a semi-truck as the left lane was closing and traffic had to merge to the right.
The car crashed into the semi and then rolled over in the right ditch.
It's not clear how long the highway will remain closed, but people going that way are urged to find an alternate route.
