WESTLAND, Mich. (WXYZ) — Police in Westland have a person in custody in the vandalism of St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy Parish.
The incident happened early Wednesday. Church officials say a parish employee responded to a security alarm and saw someone inside the sanctuary. Police responded and took the person into custody.
An investigation determined that the person used arock to break in through a ground floor window.
Damage to the parish included: broken, five-foot-tall statutes of Mary and St. Joseph; broken votive candles; wax on the rugs and pews; torn pamphlets; an ambo and other items tipped over; and water damage from a spilled font.
It does not appear the tabernacle or altar were damaged.
The damage has been cleared. A Mass of Reparation was held Wednesday morning, as the damage is considered desecration of a worship place.
Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Westland police.
