Woman's message about motherhood goes viral

Posted

Journalist Emily Bingham is a social media specialist and an accomplished guitar player. She is very candid about certain parts of her life but her reproductive and procreation plans are none of your business.

The 33-year-old posted a friendly PSA on Facebook, letting others know questions about whether she wants to be a mom are off limits.

“I knew it would get people’s attention,” said Emily. “I didn’t know it would get that many people’s attention.”

Her post has gone viral with close to 40,000 likes. Her story made it on Good Morning America Monday morning.

She told 7 Action News for years people have been asking her when will she have a baby, including recently while she was having dinner with her boyfriend and family members.

“Not necessarily about grandchildren but about when was I going to, kinda, get on that train. I think that was the last straw for me,” said Emily.

Emily adds how she feels about the question.

“A little bit of anger in there. That’s where the none of your business comes from," she says. "There’s a little stress, maybe a kernel of truth, in what there saying in my clock is ticking.”

Emily’s post also addresses why the question is not just hurtful for single woman – but for those struggling in relationships, or possibly having fertility issues.

The powerful PSA has been shared and gotten a lot of comments. She’s amazed at how many people she has touched.

“I think, for a while, I thought I was being oversensitive. It was something I would have to grin and bear, but seeing the reaction from people,” said Emily. “Getting Facebook messages from strangers, literally from around the world - the UK, Australia, and Africa, to say thank you for saying what I’ve been wanting to say for years I either didn’t have the guts or didn’t want to upset my family.”

Emily suggests people ask questions, such as what is the best part of your day or ask others what they are excited about.

If people want to share personal information, they will do it on their own.
