WXYZ DETROIT — Next week, end of the year holiday celebrations and traditions will kick into high gear. The parties, the food, the gifts and the bowl games make for a fun and festive time.

If you’re staying in town, it’s a good time to explore some of this region’s new restaurants. Check out the museums, entertainment venues, ice skating in Campus Martius Park and colorful holiday light displays throughout metro Detroit. If you’re traveling to see family and friends, it’s a great time to reconnect. Take lots of pictures with loved ones. Years from now, you’ll cherish those very special keepsakes.

But during this holiday season, let’s also remember that for some people this can be a lonely time. Reach out to friends and neighbors who may need a helping hand. This can be a great time to volunteer with your favorite charity to help make a difference in someone's life.

Overall, this has been an exciting year for Detroit. Local and national news stories have brought positive attention to our revitalized city, making it one of America’s hottest convention and tourist destinations. Young entrepreneurs and new leaders are writing an innovative new chapter for our region of very diverse communities.

This promises to be a good start for 2020. But as we prepare to set goals for the new year, let’s take some well-deserved time to look back and be thankful for the accomplishments of 2019. Over the next several days, enjoy the religious services, the parties, the sporting events and valuable time with family and friends. Celebrate responsibly and make the most of this very special time of year!
