(WXYZ) — Lake Trust Credit Union is opening scholarship applications to Michigan residents seeking opportunities for college or trade school.

There are two scholarship opportunities; the 2021 New Beginnings and 2021 Michigan Impact scholarship application processes are open.

“Everyone should have access to higher education and to experience the empowerment it brings on an individual level, and to the community as a whole,” Lake Trust CEO and President of the Lake Trust Foundation David Snodgrass said in a press release. “There are holes in our workforce for a new wave of highly skilled professionals to fill. The Lake Trust Foundation is committed to fostering the Power in All of Us and expanding access to education. Through the Foundation’s partnership with Cleary University and trade schools, we are honored to offer scholarships that create opportunities for our members and that support Michigan’s economy.”

The New Beginnings Scholarship aims to revitalize skilled trade work as a viable career path in Michigan. It is designed for those residents that are looking to enhance or begin an education in a technical or trade field at a Michigan college or university within the calendar year.

Eligible applicants are required to submit a 600-word personal statement describing future plans in a technical or trade career of the applicant’s choice. Up to six scholarships worth a maximum of $5,000 will be awarded and can be used for tuition costs, trade equipment, professional dues and/or certifications.

The 2021 Michigan Impact Scholarship seeks to award five full-tuition scholarships for Michigan residents interested in education at Cleary University at their Livingston or Detroit campuses, or online. The scholarship focuses on assisting prospecting, undergraduate or graduate students of Cleary University to reach their educational goals.

The full-tuition opportunity is particularly encouraged for members of the community whose livelihood has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, to support skill growth or exploration of a new career path. Applicants will write a personal statement describing a field of interest and why their decision is impactful to the Michigan labor force and the community.

Applications for both scholarships must be completed by March 12. All applicants must be a Michigan resident and a Lake Trust Credit Union member, or eligible for Lake Trust Credit Union membership. To apply, visit Laketrust.org/Scholarships.
