(WXYZ) — June 2, 2010. The Imperfect Game. Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga was one out away from a historic Perfect Game against the Cleveland Indians, when umpire Jim Joyce called Jason Donald safe at first on a grounder, but the call was wrong.
The game went down in history for what happened, and for the apology after, and now, a new documentary about the game will air on Fox Sports 1 Monday night.
Called "A Perfect Game*" it will air from 10 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on FS1. It features interviews with Joyce, Galarraga and others.
"I'm watching the ball go between the first baseman and the second baseman, and I'm thinking, 'OK, this is either going to get through or it's going to be a close play,'" Joyce said in a preview posted on Twitter.
"Miguel Cabrera goes running and catches the ball, and I was running at the same time because I was watching the play. I can feel he was getting close," Galarraga said. "My first reaction was like, yes! I was in shock. Because inside, I was like, he was out, he was out. Why is this happening?"
Armando Galarraga was one out away from throwing a perfect game. But a controversial call at first base by umpire Jim Joyce changed both of their lives, and created an unexpected story of sportsmanship and redemption.
