DETROIT — Casey Mize won’t be joining the Tigers this year.
General manager Al Avila said Thursday he's seen so much progress from Mize, but wants him to face adversity in the minor leagues.
"I hear people, ‘Oh, bring up Casey Mize right now.' There's really no purpose in doing that," Avila said.

Avila said Mize wouldn't help the Tigers make the playoffs, and pointed out young pitchers usually struggle in their first call-up to the big leagues.
