Detroit Red Wings send Gustav Nyquist to San Jose Sharks for draft picks

DETROIT (WXYZ) — The Detroit Red Wings took on the San Jose Sharks at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday, and by early Monday morning, the team had also sent forward Gustav Nyquist to the Sharks.

The team announced it was trading the 29-year-old winger to the Sharks for a 2019 second-round pick and a conditional third-round pick in the 2020 draft. If the Sharks advance to the 2019 Stanley Cup Final or re-sign Nyquist, the third-round pick would become a second round pick.

It comes days after the team also sent defenseman Nick Jensen to the Washington Capitals in exchange for another second-round pick, this time in 2020, and a prospect, and now the team has 10 draft picks in 2019, with two extra second-round picks and a fifth-round pick. They also now have 17 selections between 2020 and 2021.

Nyquist was drafted by the Red Wings in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL draft. He has 295 points, including 125 goals, in 481 games with the Red Wings since he made his debut in 2011. This year, he has 16 goals and 33 assists in 62 games.
