Jim Caldwell laughed at a question that started with a reporter bringing up his time in the game.
His opening press conference at Lions training camp Thursday afternoon was steered at what's next, not at what happened last year.
Caldwell was asked about Bob Quinn keeping him as the head coach, and replied by saying how happy he is to work in the game of football.
"Let's not count me out too soon. I’ve got some good years ahead of me," he said.
As for his job security, Caldwell said he operates the same way he does when he started coaching in the 1970s.
"Coaches only had a one year contract. That's what I worked on for 24 years. Your job is secure as the last game."
The Lions are coming off a 7-9 season. They started the year 1-7 before winning six of their final eight games.
Caldwell said he won't change his personal philosophy on his coaching outlook, and won't look at what's been said.
He wouldn't acknowledge if the Ford family or Bob Quinn had given him any indication on his future with the team.
"We're going to be a better football team. We have to be," Caldwell said. "I believe this is going to be a good football team."
Lions veterans arrived in Allen Park for training camp today. They will begin practices on the field on Friday afternoon.
